About

The S.AND research group analyzes sand uses along the shifting shorelines of the Afrasian Sea (also known as Indian Ocean). We are a diverse group of social anthropologists with a strong interest in environmental justice, infrastructural development, and coastal urbanity. While we wish to ethnographically portray the entanglements of sand and urban life, S.AND follows a multimodal approach and embraces art and design in both research practice and outreach work.
